When you buy a Fender guitar, most of the time you get more than just the instrument. There are many accessories that will help you get started playing it right away.

Some of these accessories come with a new fender guitar, although it might vary depending on the specific accessory. So…

What Exactly Does Come With a New Fender Guitar?

With a (beginner) Fender guitar bundle the following accessories are included:

Do Fender Guitars Come With A Case?

Depending on where you buy your fender and what model you buy a fender might come with a hard case or a gig bag.

When I emailed Guitar Center to ask this, they told me that Fender Squier guitars and Fender guitars below $1000 usually don’t come with a hard case but only a gigbag if you’re lucky.

When you’re buying one of the more premium models, a hard case is often included with the purchase.

Taking a look on Amazon, you can see a lot of models that are sold separately without a case, no matter what the price of the guitar is.

There are also some Fender guitars sold as a package that include a bunch of accessories often with a hard case. But those guitar packages come at a premium compared to buying the stand-alone guitar.

At Sweetwater it’s the same as with Guitar Center, Cheaper models don’t come with a case and the more premium models come with either a gig bag or a hard case.

Do Fender Guitars Come With Picks?

When you are buying your Fender at a brick-and-mortar store. You will likely get some free promotional guitar picks from the store or Fender with your purchase.

If not, you can ask the salesperson for some guitar picks. Most of the time they will give you some basic picks for free. If you want some higher-end guitar picks you probably have to pay for them.

When you are buying your Fender guitar online, sometimes it sometimes also comes with some free promotional guitar picks. But this is less likely than when you’re buying it in a physical store.

Do Fender Guitars Come With Cables?

Cables are not included with a Fender guitar. Unless you’re buying a bundle, which also includes a lot of other accessories like a gig-bag, picks, and an amplifier.

If you buy a separate guitar amplifier, it usually includes cables.

Do Fender Guitars Come With Straps?

Fender guitars do not come with a strap. What Fender guitars do come with, are the buttons where you put a strap on. But you have to buy the actual strap separately.

Unless you buy a beginner guitar set or package that includes a strap. But then again, the straps included in bundles like this are usually not of the highest quality.

If you’re serious about using a strap while playing guitar, I advise you to either go for a leather or woven strap that is a lot more comfortable and not itching in your neck like a nylon strap.

Are you a guitarist that is playing on stage and jumping around a lot with your guitar? Then another accessory I can’t recommend enough is some strap locks. Strap locks prevent your guitar strap from slipping off.

Do Fender Guitars Come With Strings?

Fender guitars always come with a set of strings installed on the guitar, usually tuned to standard tuning: #E#A#D#G#B#E.

It’s a good idea to put on some new guitar strings every 100 hours of playing or every three to four months of age, whichever comes first.

Changing strings often ensures you keep that crisp and new sound on your guitar. Plus, it prevents your strings from smelling bad.

But also in case of a string breaking, a spare pair of strings come in handy. You have to buy those separately thought.

Does a Fender Guitar Come With An Amplifier?

When you’re buying a separate Fender guitar, an AMP will not be included in the price. Usually, an amplifier is only included when you buy a guitar bundle.

Although when you buy a Fender amplifier there are usually cables included.

Other Accessories That Don’t Come With Your Fender But Can Come In Handy

If you’re just starting to learn to play guitar, there are a few obvious things you should buy in addition to your new Fender guitar, such as an amplifier and some cables.

But there are also some things that are less obvious. Especially if you’ve never touched a guitar before. Here are some accessories that are not necessary perse, but that are useful to buy with your first guitar.

Guitar Stand

Although a guitar stand is not necessary it can be very handy and safe to get one. A guitar stand can prevent your guitar from falling and going out of tune quickly.

It also gives you an easy place to put it down when it’s not in use. If the guitar is on a stand, it won’t slide or fall to the ground. In addition, you’ll have quick and easy access to your instrument any time you want to play it.

Guitar Tuner

It’s very easy to install a guitar tuner app on your phone. But those apps are not always accurate and for some, you even have to pay a monthly fee.

Getting a tuner for $15 on amazon can prevent a lot of headaches when tuning your guitar.

Guitar Capo

A capo is a great addition to a beginner’s first guitar. A capo is a device that can be attached to the neck of a guitar. It can be used to change the key of a song by changing its pitch.

A guitar capo can be useful for first-time guitar players because it can make it easier to play certain chords. It can also help you to learn how to play songs in different keys.

The capo has two main parts: a clamp and a lever. The clamp secures the capo to the headstock, while the lever acts as a lever that pushes down on the strings. When a guitarist uses a capo, they are raising the pitch of all of the strings.

A guitar capo can be good to buy with your first guitar because it can make learning how to play easier. It can also help you to learn new songs more quickly.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are usually not a lot of accessories included when shopping for a Fender guitar.

If this is the first guitar you’re buying, consider buying a Fender beginner kit with all the accessories you need so you can start playing right away!

If not, and you’re looking for a more expensive thousand dollars plus Fender. Keep in mind that only a case, strings, and some picks come with the guitar. You will need to purchase an amp and some cables separately.

If you buy a fender that is under a thousand dollars. In addition to a separate amp and some cables, you’ll need to buy a case and some picks.

Thanks for reading!

You’ve just landed a gig in a different state and realized you need to take your guitar on the airplane.

Or, you’re about to take your dream vacation to Hawaii but don’t want to leave your guitar behind. What are your options? Can you bring a guitar on a Southwest Airlines flight? Read on for all the details.

Can You Bring a Guitar On a Southwest Airlines Plane?

You can bring your guitar on a Southwest flight as long as it is in a hard case and it fits in the overhead bin. Your guitar will count as a carry-on bag if placed in the overhead bin.

If your guitar doesn’t fit in the overhead bin (when you have a jumbo guitar for instance) you can check it in for free, in that case, make sure to follow the packing tips below!

Upgraded Boarding

To make sure there is still room in the overhead bins for your guitar. You could consider paying a fee starting from $30 for upgraded boarding.

So you can be sure you’ll be one of the first on the plane. This way your guitar doesn’t accidentally end up in the hold of the airplane because there was no room left.

To upgrade you can ask Southwest personnel at the departure gate or ticket counter for availability.

With United Airlines this upgrade starts from only $15.

Size Requirements of Your Bags

On the website of Southwest Airlines, it is stated that your carry-on bag can only be 24 inches x 16 inches x 10 inches.

For musical instruments, an exception is made and the only requirements are that your guitar is in a hard case and that it fits in the overhead bin.

Maximum Weight Requirements

Your Guitar case can have a maximum weight of 50 pounds with Southwest Airlines just like a normal carry-on bag.

So unless you plan to put some rocks in the case with your guitar, you’ll be fine.

How Much Does It Cost To Check a Guitar On Southwest Airlines?

With Southwest, you can take two carry-on bags, two checked bags plus a personal item for free (your guitar counts as a carry-on bag). A fifth bag (or guitar) will cost $75 per item. You can definitely call this a very generous southwest airlines guitar policy.

I would recommend taking your guitar with you as carry-on luggage so you can be sure it’s safe. You don’t want airport personnel to throw your guitar around.

Does a Guitar Fit In The Overhead Bin?

The overhead bins on a Southwest flight are about 50 inches wide, a standard guitar case is about 44 inches. So it’s big enough to fit regular guitars. You have to put it in sideways so that the neck is pointing towards the cockpit or tail.

Your guitar is likely going to take up three suitcase spaces, but this is allowed on an airplane. You just have to make sure you’re one of the first to board the plane so that there is still room.

How To Pack Your Guitar For a Flight.

When you are taking your guitar as a carry-on you only really need a hard case, and that’s it. But if you’re going to check in your guitar you want to protect it a little better. We’re going to cover a few things you could do.

You could consider packing your guitar like this even if you take it as a carry-on. Just in case there is no room in the overhead bins and you have to put it in the hold of the airplane.

Invest In a Good Hard Case

With Southwest airlines, you HAVE to travel with your guitar in a hard case. But that is not the only reason you want to use one.

A hard case also protects your guitar from being damaged. So make sure you buy a sturdy one!

On the other hand, you also don’t want your guitar case to be too heavy. Since you’ll be traveling with your guitar and you have to carry it around with you.

A sturdy light hard case like this one is perfect to travel with.

You Don’t Have to Loosen Your Strings

Everyone thinks that you have to detune your guitar before a flight, but that is a myth.

It is true that steel strings can create a lot of tension on the guitar, but this doesn’t really matter because all modern guitars have what we call ”adjustable truss rods”. So when there is too much tension on the neck/strings you could just adjust the truss rod.

Plus, the cabin that the luggage is stored in is climate-controlled and pressurized.

There are guitar manufacturers that ship their guitars worldwide and this is mostly done by air travel. When a guitar arrives in the store or on your doorstep it is still somewhat tuned to standard.

Use Bubble Wrap To Protect Your Guitar

Use some bubble wrap to protect your guitar inside the case. Do this especially if the case you are using is not made for the model of guitar you have, then you may have a lot of extra space around your guitar.

Make sure that your guitar sits tight and has no room to move around in the case. So stuff it with bubble wrap and put some cloth under the neck for some extra support.

Use a Lock On Your Guitar Case

It’s a good idea to use a lock on your guitar case particularly if you have an expensive guitar.

A lock doesn’t prevent people from stealing the whole guitar case but it does prevent people from peaking inside and checking if your guitar is worth stealing.

Label Your Guitar

Make sure you put a ”Fragile” label on your guitar letting the airline’s personnel know they have to be careful with your guitar.

Also, consider putting a name tag with your phone number on your case. For the rare instance that someone else carries a guitar case like you, or for when your guitar gets lost.

General Tips For Flying With Your Guitar

Don’t Bring Your Best Guitar On The Plane

This may seem like a no-brainer, but don’t bring your best guitar on the plane.

That means a guitar that is a collectible or one that has sentimental value to you or a guitar that is signed by your favorite guitarist.

You never know when something might happen to it and you really don’t want to damage your most expensive guitar.

So unless you’re a professional musician who needs to take their best guitar with them, consider leaving it at home.

Pack a Humidifier With Your Guitar

Depending on where you’re traveling the air could be very dry. Your guitar is a wooden instrument and it could get damaged if it dries out.

You can get these small humidifier bags that can fit in your guitar case. Some of the really cheap ones tend to get moldy quickly, so consider buying one of better quality like this D’Addario Two-Way Humidification System.

Book a Seat Near The Front of The Plane

If you’re going to check in your guitar and you’re not taking it as a carry-on. Make sure you’re booking a seat in the front of the plane.

That way you are one of the first to get off the plane and you’re one of the first to get to the luggage belt so you can grab your guitar right after it lands on it.

Get a Travel Guitar or 3/4 Guitar

Journey Instruments make some of the best travel guitars that can snap into two parts so it has the size of a normal suitcase.

This makes it very convenient to travel with. Plus you don’t have to go through that awkward moment when other people on the plane get irritated because you are taking up three suitcase spots.

Another option is buying a 3/4 guitar. These guitars are a bit smaller than a regular guitar, also making them more convenient to travel with.

Conclusion

Yes, you can take your guitar on a Southwest Airlines flight, the southwest instrument policy requires it’s in a hard case and fits in the overhead bin. You also have to make sure you’re taking the right precautions so your guitar doesn’t get damaged or stolen.

Use a hardshell case, pack some bubble wrap, put a label on it, and consider using a lock. Flying with your guitar should be a fun and easy experience as long as you take the necessary precautions.

You might be visiting family for the holidays and thought why don’t I just take my guitar with me? But… Can you take a guitar with you on a United flight?

United Airlines has a great reputation for being one of the most pet-friendly airlines. But what about musical instruments?

Can You Bring a Guitar On a United Airlines Plane?

You can bring your guitar on a united flight as long as it is in a hard case and it fits in the overhead bin. Your guitar will count as a carry-on bag if placed in the overhead bin.

If you’re taking a guitar on a united flight as your only hand-luggage item, you’ll be able to bring it onboard free of charge.

But if you have another carry-on item with you, such as a suitcase, then you’ll have to check in one of them.

Exceptions

If you bought a Basic Economy ticket for a flight that is not trans-Atlantic. You’re only allowed to have a “personal item” with you.

So unless your guitar fits under the seat in front of you (this might only be the case with a small ukulele for example), you are required to check your guitar and pay the checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling charge.

Priority Boarding

To make sure there is still room in the overhead bins for your guitar. You could consider paying a small fee starting from $15 for priority boarding.

So you can be sure you’ll be one of the first on the plane. This way your guitar doesn’t accidentally end up in the hold of the airplane because there was no room left.

Size Requirements of Your Bags

On the website of United airlines, it is stated that your carry-on bag can only be 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches.

For musical instruments, an exception is made and the only requirements are that your guitar is in a hard case and that it fits in the overhead bin.

Maximum Weight Requirements

Your Guitar case can have a maximum weight of 50 pounds with united airlines just like a normal carry-on bag.

So unless you plan to put some rocks in the case with your guitar, you’ll be fine.

How Much Does It Cost To Check a Guitar On United Airlines?

If you have to check your guitar because you have another suitcase with you or you’re flying Basic Economy, then it will cost you $35 for the first checked bag.

If you have not indicated this in advance and you have to check it at the gate you have to pay another $25 gate handling charge.

I would recommend taking your guitar with you as carry-on luggage so you can be sure it’s safe. You don’t want airport personnel to throw your guitar around.

Does a Guitar Fit In The Overhead Bin?

The overhead bins on a united flight are big enough to fit regular guitars.

With United airlines, you HAVE to travel with your guitar in a hard case.

Conclusion

Yes, you can take your guitar on a United Airlines flight if it’s in a hard case and fits in the overhead bin.

You might have bought yourself a guitar a few months ago and you have been learning some songs on it.

But now your guitar starts to sound a bit different than before, and you’re wondering… Should I put some new strings on my guitar or are these old ones still good?

We’re here to figure that out.

Is It Better To Use New or Old Guitar Strings?

The first thing we need to know is that there’s no definitive answer. It all comes down to personal preference.

Some guitarists prefer the sound of new strings, while others prefer the sound of old strings.

It really is a matter of preference and what you think sounds better.

Now, with that being said, there are some advantages and disadvantages to using either new or old strings.

We’ll go over those so you can make a more informed decision on which type of string is right for you.

Advantages of Using New Strings

There are several advantages to using new strings on your guitar.

They will have a more crisp and sharp sound to them.

This is because the new strings have not been played as much and they haven’t been through the wear and tear that old strings have.

This means that they will be able to vibrate more freely, which gives you a sharper sound.

Seeing this as an advantage is of course, a bit subjective. There will be a lot of people out there that prefer the flatter and warmer sound of older guitar strings.

Another advantage of using new strings is that they’re less likely to break.

This is because they haven’t been played as much and they’re not as worn down.

Worn-down strings are more likely to break because the metal is thinner in certain places.

So, if you’re doing regular gigs and don’t want your strings to break when you’re on stage, consider changing your strings every three months.

Disadvantages of Using New Strings

New strings will go out of tune faster in the beginning.

This is because they haven’t been stretched out as much as old guitar strings, it will take about a week or two before your new strings are settled in.

You have to pay for new strings.

This is pretty obvious, but it’s worth mentioning. You’ll have to spend money on new strings every few months if you want to keep using new strings all the time.

Advantages of Using Old Strings

There are also several advantages to using old strings on your guitar.

Old strings have a warmer sound.

This is because the metal has been played for a while and it’s been through the wear and tear of regular playing.

The metal will also start to oxidize, which gives the strings a different sound.

Some people prefer this warmer sound, as it can be more pleasant to listen to.

Older strings are already stretched out.

Another advantage of using old strings is that they’re already stretched out. This means that they won’t go out of tune as quickly as new strings will. So, if you’re playing a gig and you don’t want your strings to go out of tune, consider using old strings.

Disadvantages of Using Old Strings

Old strings may not be tuned properly after a while.

If your strings are only a few months old they will usually stay in tune longer than fresh strings.

But when you haven’t replaced the strings for a year or more.

When the strings get really old the contact of your fingers eventually does something to the material of the strings.

Especially if you play guitar often and passionately. Eventually, this causes loss and damage of material on your strings.

The result is a false octave pitch, which causes everything you play to be out of tune. Therefore, you may find that when you play the first fret, you get the right tone but your guitar may be out of tune at the 10th fret.

Do New Guitar Strings Sound Better Than Old Ones?

Now that we’ve gone over the advantages and disadvantages of both new and old strings, you might be wondering which one sounds better.

As we mentioned before, this is a matter of preference. Some people prefer the sound of new strings, while others prefer the sound of old strings.

It really is a matter of preference and what you’re looking for in your sound.

If you want a sharper, more crisp sound, then new strings are probably the way to go.

If you want a warmer, more mellow sound, then old strings are probably the way to go.

In the end, it’s up to you to decide which one is better.

Check out some New Guitar Strings on Amazon!

When To Change Guitar Strings

If you want to keep that sharp crisp sound of new strings on your guitar, it’s advised that you change your strings about every three months.

If you like the sound of older strings, you could just go off hearing and replace the strings if you don’t like the sound anymore.

Or change them when you get the tuning problem that I talked about earlier in this article.

How To Change Guitar Strings

The first thing you need to do is loosen the old strings. You can do this by turning the tuning pegs in a counter-clockwise direction.

Once the old strings are loose, you can remove them from the guitar by taking the strings out of the turning keys in the headstock. And after that taking out the pins in the bridge so the strings come out.

Make sure you dispose of them properly so they don’t end up in a landfill.

Now it’s time to put on the new strings. Start with the low E string, which is the thickest string.

Put the new string in the bridge with the pin and then thread it through the tuning peg. Make sure you leave about two inches of slack.

Now it’s time to start tightening the string. Turn the tuning peg in a clockwise direction until the string is in tune.

Repeat this process for the rest of the strings. Once all the strings are on and in tune, you can start playing your guitar.

Check out some New Guitar Strings on Amazon!

Conclusion

As you can see, there are both advantages and disadvantages to using new and old strings.

It really is a matter of preference as to which one you want to use. If you’re looking for a sharp, crisp sound, then new strings are probably the way to go.

If you want a warmer, more mellow sound, then old strings are probably the way to go.

In the end, it’s up to you to decide which one is better. Just remember that if you want to keep that sharp sound, you need to change your strings about every three months.

You bought your guitar and now you’re wondering, do I need a guitar stand or can I do without one?

Although a guitar stand is not necessary it can be very handy and safe to get one. A guitar stand can prevent your guitar from falling and going out of tune quickly.

If you decide not to get one, you will need to find some other place to store your guitar. In this article, we’ll cover why a guitar stand is nice to have and discuss alternative ways to store your guitar.

Why a Guitar Stand Is Necessary Sometimes

In general, a guitar stand protects your guitar from damage and gives you a place to put it down when it’s not in use. If the guitar is on a stand, it won’t slide or fall to the ground. In addition, you’ll have quick and easy access to your instrument any time you want to play it.

Especially when eventually you want to do a gig, you have to have a guitar stand to put your guitar on when you’re taking a break or when you’re switching from acoustic to electric guitar for instance.

Your guitar also won’t go out of tune so quickly as when you put it on your couch for instance, because the head and snares won’t be touching anything on a stand.

When your guitar is flat on a couch there can be cushions touching the tuning knobs or something can pull on your strings.

Alternatives To a Guitar Stand

What do you do if you don’t want or can’t get a guitar stand for some reason?

I once had a guitar stand break and was too lazy to replace it. It took a few months before I did, so I had to find alternative ways to store my guitar.

Put Your Guitar In The Corner Of a Room

One way I found is putting it in the corner of the room leaning against the wall, with the front side pointing against the wall. This doesn’t look that great and you might not like the idea of it touching the wall, but it’s relatively safe.

Your guitar will lean against the wall with its string retainers. That way the snares and tuning knobs aren’t touching anything.

Make a Guitar Stand Yourself

If you like having a small DIY project, this could be perfect for you. You could make a guitar stand of some wood or if you want to get serious and you have the equipment, you could make yourself a steel guitar stand.

This way you can make sure your stand is sturdy enough to hold your guitar safely.

I found this tutorial on how to make a wooden guitar stand yourself:

Store Your Guitar In a Gig-bag

If you don’t want to have your guitar out all the time, this could be a good alternative as well. Keep it in a gig-bag and hang it up on a coat hanger or put it under your bed.

This is good for those who mostly play at home, but don’t want to leave their instrument out all the time. It’s also a very safe way to store your guitar, when it’s in a bag under your bed there is not much that can happen to it!

Check out some good Gig Bags on Amazon!

Put Your Guitar Against Something else

Another way to store your guitar is by putting it on its side leaning against something. You could put it against the side of your couch for instance. Make sure that the snares and guitar head are not touching anything though.

Take into consideration that when you do this, your guitar may slip or slide away falling on the ground.

The different Types of Guitar Stands Available

Multi Guitar Stand

If you have a lot of guitars or if you want to store more than one guitar, then a multi guitar stand is something for you.

Conclusion

A Guitar stand isn’t always necessary. There are many different ways to store your guitar, and the best way for you might not be a guitar stand. Maybe you prefer to just put it in the gig-bag when you’re not using it.

You can also make your own guitar stand if you want something more customized.

Whichever way you choose, just make sure your instrument is safe and won’t go out of tune easily, by not touching the snares or tuning knobs!

Do you know the sound of a guitar? It’s warm, rich, and inviting. A guitar is an instrument that is loved by many people who enjoy playing it, listening to it, or both.

But guitars are not all created equal- some guitars have more warmth than others. This article explores some of the warmest sounding guitars on the market today.

What Makes A Guitar Sound Warm?

When people discuss a guitar’s warmth in terms of tone, they are usually talking about the depth of the sound. These warm-sounding guitars have depth that you can feel when you play them, especially when there is no amplification involved.

Many factors go into creating different sounds in guitars including the materials used to craft the body and neck, pickups, electronics, wood choices for top construction, bracing patterns used under the top, scale length, string gauges/materials, durometer (hardness) of fret material, hardware finish, etc.

All of these components contribute to how warm or bright a guitar sounds. Let’s look at some things that can make a guitar sound warmer:

The Kind of Wood That is Used

Rosewood and Maple are both very warm-sounding wood for a guitar. They have a very low-frequency response, making it sound deep.

Ebony is another wood that many companies use to craft the necks of their guitars to make them sound warmer.

A combination of these materials can add a lot of warmth and depth to the tone of a guitar.

How The Guitar Body is Made

A single-cutaway gives a warmer tonal feel because there are fewer elements in the overall design. This results in less high-frequency overtones coming from other parts of the body such as the heel joint and where other pieces join together.

Solid woods will generally give a warmer sound than a laminated one because they vibrate more freely, but this also depends on how much each piece has been manipulated by hand.

The Kind of Pickup of The Guitar

The pickup can also have a big effect on the sound of the guitar. A humbucker pickup has a fuller sound because the coil doesn’t pick up any of the outside noise, and it is less susceptible to feedback than single-coil pickups.

Single coils can sometimes be warmer sounding than humbuckers depending on the design and materials chosen by the manufacturer.

For example, if they use Alnico magnets or opposite polarities, this will cancel out some of the high frequencies and create a more mid-range tone overall.

The String Gauges

String gauges have a huge effect on the warmth of your guitar, especially the thicker gauges. Thicker strings are more unwieldy, but they also produce more low-end sound and volume.

This is because the heavier gauge puts more pressure on the neck of your guitar which results in it pushing back harder to counterbalance this extra weight (which gives you that warm tone).

The Amplifier Settings

Another thing that plays a part in the sound of your guitar is the amplifier settings you use. There are several different types of sounds you can get from your amplifier, no matter what guitar you play through it.

One way to make your amplifier sound “warmer” is by using the EQ controls to roll off some of the treble frequencies in either the low-end or high-end.

Simply reduce the highs and/or lows that you don’t want in order to achieve a more pleasing sound with less brightness.

Or play around with the settings until your guitar sounds the warmest.

The Most Warm Sounding Electric Guitars:

Les Paul Guitars

Les Paul is a very warm-sounding electric guitar in general compared to other brands because of the material choices and other components used.

The neck is usually made of maple wood with a rosewood fretboard to add warmth, while mahogany is generally chosen for the body to add depth and fullness to the tone.

The Les Paul has humbucker pickups that cancel out background noise which helps contribute to its warmth

Fender Telecaster

Usually, Telecaster guitars will sound warmer than a Stratocaster because of the way they are constructed.

They usually have noiseless single-coil pickups which are designed to cancel out excess noise from other sources, not only making the guitar sound cleaner but also warmer because there is no background buzz or hum.

You can make your Telecaster even warmer by using heavier strings with a thicker gauge.

Check out Fender Telecasters on Amazon!

Epiphone Guitars

Epiphone guitars are a bit like Les Paul guitars in that they are made with more expensive materials in order to produce a warmer tone. The neck is usually made of mahogany, while the body is usually made of solid maple wood for its warmth and resonance.

Epiphone pickups also have opposite polarity which means they cancel out some of the high-frequency noise that single coils would otherwise pick up.

Check out Epiphone Guitars on Amazon!

The Most Warm Sounding Acoustic Guitars:

Jumbo Guitars

Because of their big bodies, Jumbo guitars sound a lot louder and warmer than normal guitars. Although they can be a bit clumsy they really sound warm.

If you want a warm sound simply choose Jumbo for its volume and size regardless of what kind of material is used to make it because almost all jumbo guitars will sound warmer than any normal guitar.

Check out Jumbo Guitars on Amazon!

Taylor Guitars

The Taylor guitar sounds warm because of the shape of their bodies. They are designed with rounded shoulders rather than straight shoulders to provide a fuller tone that is not as nasal sounding as regular guitars.

Their soundboards are also pretty large which contributes to its warmth.

Gibson Guitars

Gibson guitars usually have a warmer tone compared to other guitar brands also because of the way they are designed.

Like I said before with the Jumbo guitars, the bigger your body, the warmer your tone will be.

Their necks are also made of mahogany which is a very warm-sounding wood that naturally resonates and creates sound easily.

Conclusion

There are several different types of guitars that produce a warm tone. Some of the most popular brands include Gibson, Fender, and Epiphone.

You can make your guitar sound warmer by using different amplifier settings or changing the type of strings you use.

Jumbo guitars tend to be the loudest and warmest sounding acoustic guitars, while Les Pauls have a very warm electric sound.

Try out different guitars until you find one that suits your style and gives you the warmth you are looking for in your music. Thanks for reading!

The Ibanez AMP series are some of the most popular AMPs on the market. They are especially well known for their versatility and durability.

These amps have been in production since the 1950s, so there is a lot of experience that went into them – this means they can be depended upon to get the job done, no matter what it may be.

The Ibanez AMP line has expanded over time to include many different types of models and power levels, which makes them an attractive option for any musician or music lover. Ibanez is also known for being a little bit cheaper than your Fender or Gibson but it still has significant sound quality.

A Brief History of Ibanez

Ibanez is a Japanese brand that makes guitars and everything that has to do with guitars. Due to its significant properties, the brand got recognition on a large scale.

It received bulk orders from Europe, and the USA. It is the first brand that produces seven-string and eight-string guitars.

The brand started its operation at a book store in 1908. With the passage of time, the brand extended its operations to music instruments. Around 1935 the company only produced Spanish-style acoustic guitars.

One of these guitars was given the brand name of “Ibanez Salvador” in the honor of luthier Salvador Ibanez. Which later on become famous with the brand name of Ibanez.

Modern music instruments like guitars, amps, etc started production from 1957 to 1960 by Suzuki violin and Guyatone. From there on the business only expanded to now a worldwide instrument brand.

Are Ibanez AMPs good?

Yes, they are. They may not be the best amplifier on the market, but if you’re looking for something that has a proven track record and will get the job done, Ibanez amps will likely exceed your expectations for a decent price! (and even if they don’t – you’ll still get years of reliable use out of them).

Deciding if an Ibanez amplifier will be good for you personally depends on what type of sound you’re looking for. They do offer a lot in terms of flexibility and versatility, but they really excel when it comes to metal tones.

Many users claim that the “gritty” sounds associated with metal are intensified with this brand, which is exactly what most guitarists want to hear when trying out new equipment.

The Ibanez AMP series is definitely worth trying out especially if you play loud styles like punk or metal.

The durability factor alone makes them an attractive option due to their ability to sound good even after years and years of using them. So, are they good? It depends on who you ask – most will agree that they’re powerful and sturdy

Where Are Ibanez Amplifiers Made?

As already mentioned, Ibanez is a Japanese musical instrument manufacturing brand. Founded in 1908, The headquarter is located in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan.

The brand manufactures different types of musical instruments such as guitars, amplifiers, and different pedals as well as anything else that has to do with playing guitar.

What is a Vintage Guitar?

While an antique is defined as an object that has been around for more than 100 years, there is no formal definition of what constitutes a vintage item.

However, guitars that are at least 30 years old often fit under this category, and even younger instruments are sometimes branded as such by vendors. For the purposes of this article, therefore, lets say anything before the early to mid-nineties! (Blimey, makes me feel old!)

Considering a vintage 3/4 guitar? Find out more on the link.

Is A Vintage Guitar Worth Buying For You? (Better Than Modern Guitars?)

If you’re buying a vintage guitar because you think it’s better, it probably is not. Most new guitars are built better than almost any guitar that is 30 to 40 years old. However, this strongly depends on make and how well the guitar has been treated!

As for buying a vintage guitar for the purpose of its value rising, that could be considered. there are still guitars out there that sell for more and more every year.

What about learning to play a vintage slide guitar?

Why Are/Aren’t Vintage Guitars Worth It?

There are two answers to the question. Let’s start with the reasons why vintage guitars are worth it.

According to different users’ reviews. The sound and tone of a guitar improve with the passage of time. Besides this, a lot of the time the wood used in vintage guitars is more expensive than in new guitars, such as the renowned Brazilian Rosewood. It makes the guitar lighter and stiffer.

It is worth mentioning some vintage guitars that were made in the 1940s and ’50s, were famous for their specific sounds. Some guitars that were made even earlier like some pre-war Martin guitars still possess their value. Vintage guitars like a Guild Starfire or Fender Stratocasters also still retain their value.

But according to some different review websites, vintage guitars are worth nothing because they are outdated. Old vintage guitars are either homemade or manufactured in old workshops. While modern guitars are manufactured in modern factories equipped with up-to-date technology.

Besides this, the hardware is fragile, less ideal, and prone to damage. Another issue with vintage guitars is that the parts are difficult to replace. As old parts are not available nowadays.

At What Age Is A Guitar Considered Vintage?

As mentioned earlier, there isn’t a specific definition of when something is “vintage” but any guitar that is 30+ years old could be considered that.

But when we take this definition: “the time that something of quality was produced.” we’ll get a different answer. Because of the rising popularity of the guitar in the early 1970s, a lot of guitar manufacturers started mass producing guitars using CNC routers, and machines.

Before that, these guitars were handmade in small workshops. The 59 Les Paul which is made in the early ’60s is an example of a vintage guitar that can still be valuable because it was handmade.

After a while, in the 1980s the public realized that the quality of guitars being sold has declined a lot. So, eventually, people demanded better quality and weren’t buying mass-produced guitars anymore. Causing producers to improve processes and return to the original quality of guitars made before the 70s.

Pros of Vintage Guitars

1. Rarity and Collectability

Vintage guitars, particularly those from iconic brands like Gibson and Fender, are less in number. This scarcity, coupled with their historical significance, makes them highly collectible and potentially profitable investments as their value can increase over time.

2. Handcrafted Quality

Many vintage guitars, especially those made before the 70s, were handcrafted by skilled luthiers. This results in a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that is often lacking in mass-produced modern guitars, adding to their appeal.

3. Unique and Distinctive Tone

Vintage guitars are renowned for their unique and distinctive tone. The aging process of the wood and the use of high-quality materials contribute to a sound that many guitarists find appealing and irreplaceable.

4. Quality Materials

Most vintage guitars were made using high-quality woods, such as Brazilian Rosewood, which are now rare or even prohibited from use in new guitars. These materials not only contribute to the unique tone of vintage guitars but also add to their value.

5. Aesthetic Appeal

The design and style of vintage guitars often have an aesthetic appeal that modern guitars can’t replicate. The patina of age, the wear from years of playing, and the classic designs make them visually attractive to many guitarists.

Cons of Vintage Guitars

1. High Cost

Vintage guitars, especially those in good condition or from well-known brands, can be significantly more expensive than new guitars. This high cost can be a barrier for many potential buyers.

2. Difficulty in Finding Replacement Parts

As vintage guitars age, they may require repairs or replacement parts. However, finding original parts for vintage guitars can be challenging and expensive, as many of these parts are no longer manufactured.

3. Limited Versatility in Sound

While vintage guitars are prized for their unique tone, they may not be as versatile as modern guitars in producing a wide range of sounds. This could limit their use in certain genres or styles of music.

4. Susceptibility to Damage

Due to their age, vintage guitars can be more prone to damage and wear than new guitars. They may require more careful handling and maintenance to preserve their condition.

5. Impact of Environmental Factors

Over time, factors such as dirt, dust, and oxidation can affect both the sound and appearance of vintage guitars. These guitars may require more frequent cleaning and care to mitigate these effects.

Are Vintage Guitars Going Up in Value? Are Vintage Guitars A Good Investment?

If you have an understanding of the musical instrument market. A vintage guitar is really worth it. Due to limited availability, the prices are going higher and higher. Although more advanced and up-to-date guitars are available on the market, there is still a demand for vintage guitars and people are spending thousands of dollars buying them. That is the reason the price of vintage guitars will probably go up in the future also. The reasons behind the value increase are:

These guitars are not manufactured anymore

Best and aged sound quality

Expensive material used in the production like Brazilian Rosewood

Different types of production methods are used such as handmade guitars etc.

Why Do Vintage Guitars Sound Better? The Science Behind the Tone

Many guitarists swear by the unique sound of a vintage guitar, claiming they sound better than modern guitars. But what makes vintage guitars like Gibson Les Pauls or Fender Stratocasters so special? Here are a few reasons:

Older Wood: The wood in an older instrument has had more time to dry and settle, which can enhance the guitar’s acoustics. Brazilian Rosewood, no longer available in new guitars, is especially prized for its tonal qualities.

Handmade Craftsmanship: Many vintage guitars were handmade by skilled luthiers, resulting in a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that is often lacking in mass-produced modern guitars.

Unique Components: Vintage guitars often feature components that are no longer produced, such as P90 pickups, which can contribute to their unique sound.

(Here is the best way to change the sound of your electric guitar)

Buying a Vintage Guitar: Market Price Trends and Predictions

The vintage guitar market, like any investment, is a fascinating world of trends, predictions, and surprises. Gibson and Fender, two of the most iconic brands, have vintage models that are highly sought-after, with some fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The market value of a vintage guitar is influenced by several factors, including the condition of the instrument, its rarity, and the demand among collectors. For instance, pre-CBS Fender Stratocasters and early sixties Gibson Les Pauls are particularly popular.

The market is also influenced by the stories and previous owners of the guitars, adding to their allure and value. As a result, buying and selling vintage guitars can be a good investment, especially if you’re willing to take the time to understand the market’s intricacies.

Find out more on our homepage.

The Role of Originality in the Value of a Vintage Guitar

Originality is a key factor in the value of a vintage guitar. Guitars that retain their original parts and finishes are typically more valuable than those that have been modified or restored. Non-original parts can significantly reduce the value of a vintage guitar.

However, the condition of the instrument is equally important. A guitar that’s 100 years old but in poor condition may be less valuable than a well-preserved guitar from the early sixties.

How to Buy Vintage: Tips from a Professional Guitar Dealer

Buying a vintage guitar can be an exciting but daunting task. Here are some tips from professional guitar dealers to help you navigate the vintage guitar market:

Do Your Research: Learn about the particular model you’re interested in, including its typical market value and any potential issues to look out for.

Check the Condition: Look for signs of damage or modifications. Check the fretboard, the brace, and the potentiometer, among other parts.

Buy from a Reputable Dealer: Reputable vintage guitar stores or online platforms like Reverb.com can provide assurance about the guitar’s authenticity and condition.

Do Vintage Guitars Play Better? A Comparison with Modern Instruments

The playability of a vintage guitar is a subjective matter. Some guitarists find that vintage guitars play better, attributing this to factors such as the guitar’s setup, the feel of the fretboard, and the responsiveness of the instrument.

However, others may prefer the playability of a new instrument, which can offer modern features and conveniences. Ultimately, whether a vintage or new guitar is better to play may come down to personal preference.

How can I tell if a vintage guitar is authentic?

A: There are several ways to determine the authenticity of a vintage guitar: 1. Research the serial number: Each guitar brand has a unique serial numbering system. Look up the serial number and compare it to official records or databases.

2. Examine the hardware and components: Vintage guitars often have specific hardware and components that can help authenticate them. Look for specific markings or features that are consistent with the manufacturer and time period.

3. Consult an expert: If you’re unsure about the authenticity of a vintage guitar, seek the help of a reputable guitar appraiser or dealer who specializes in vintage instruments.

Conclusion

Discussing vintage guitars took us seven decades back. The music industry is developed so far. Updated instruments are available everywhere at a low and affordable cost.

I’ve wanted to do a review of the Ernie Ball M Steel strings for quite some time – because, in my humble opinion, they are the best strings I’ve ever used.

I now use them exclusively on all my electric guitars, the only exceptions being where I’m still trying to use up my stock of D’Addario EXL strings!

In this review, I’ll describe why I think the Ernie Ball M Steel strings are so darn awesome and do some comparisons with some other strings I’ve used as well as some great offers to try them out for yourself!

I’m going to avoid the usual waffle about materials and the manufacturing process, you can read that elsewhere if you like.

What matters, I hope you’ll agree, is how they sound, feel, and last – that’s what I’ll focus on here.

So, I’ll focus on:

Sound and feel;

Tuning stability;

Durability.

Note: I’ve also written a review about the paradigm strings, you can check that one here: Ernie Ball Paradigm Strings Review

How Much? Are you Serious?

So let’s tackle this straight away. Apart from sounding fantastic and lasting much longer (more on that in a minute)…

Consider this, a set of these strings will cost less than 2% of a $600 guitar. Players considering these strings, however, will likely have guitars worth more than that – 0.8% of a $1,500 guitar.

More importantly, the strings on your guitar form the link between what your fingers and pick are doing and the guitar itself.

All the expression you put in with string bending and vibrato, all the dynamics you put into picking hard/soft, smooth/abrasive are transferred by the strings to your guitar pickups and construction.

Putting lesser quality strings on a prized guitar would be like buying a high-end sports car then putting on the cheapest tires you can find and driving it on unpaved farm tracks!

So, are they worth the extra money? In my opinion, yes – absolutely and without question especially if you buy the multi-packs where you get good value for money.

But, it’s your decision, just try one set and see what you think – I am confident that you will be convinced once you try them and will more than likely, never look back.

Check out M Steel Strings on Amazon!

How Is The Sound And Feel Of The Ernie Ball M Steel Strings?

I have used these strings on Stratocasters and Telecasters, PRS custom and Musicman/Camelot rock machines with humbuckers playing, blues, rock, metal(ish), and jazz/funk/fusion – these things are second to none – all in my opinion of course!

When I compare the sound to other strings I’ve tried (see below), I find they have a very true and rounded sound – whether played clean or with overdrive. They generate high output which means more dynamics, especially when compared to regular nickel wound strings (but then you’d expect that).

It’s not really fair to compare them with Fender Bullets, standard strings, etc so I’ll skip over that – suffice to say, you can hear and feel the difference straight away.

Comparing to D’Addario NYXL, for example, the M steel strings are much more defined without that shimmering/glassy mid/high range bias and thinness I find that the NYXL’s, in fact most D’Addario strings have.

The closest I’ve heard is the Elixir NanoWeb strings which are in the same price bracket. Whilst the Elixers are great strings, without doubt, they lack the life, bounce, and total accuracy of the M steel strings.

Not only is the sound rich and full, they have a nice reliable feel under the fingers especially for lots of bending as they just have a smooth consistency of response that you can rely on and is predictable.

Played light – jazz comping for example, they sound full and mellow;

Played hard – funk chopping for example, they sound snappy and clean;

Played with feel – blues, they are expressive and honest;

Played shred – they cut and bite and react to every nuance.

Yep, in short, I love ‘em!

How Is The Tuning Stability Of The Ernie Ball M Steel Strings?

Ernie Ball says they have changed the way the strings are mated to the end ball (the lump at the end that stops the string from sliding out!). Whilst I believe them, of course, the proof is in the playing – so to speak.

I can confirm that these strings need less “stretching out” when first put on, and the stability is superb – they remain solid for a very long time. Even with extreme dive-bombs and pinched harmonic pull-ups with the whammy, they return to pitch perfectly.

How Is The Durability Of The Ernie Ball M Steel Strings?

They last for ages! By which I mean:

They don’t corrode (at least in my case, but everyone’s chemistry is different);

They keep their tone for a very long time (you know how those other strings go dull-sounding after a few hours of playing? Not these!). And of course, this means you have to change them less often!

They don’t break – my style of playing is quite hard on strings, but these beauties just take it. I’ve only had 2 strings snap (both at the tuning peg), and this may have been how I put the strings on. Never have they snapped at the bridge, unlike many other brands/makes.

I’ve had, for example, a set of these on my Music Man John Petrucci JPXI for 3 months playing it every day – and, they still sound crisp and clear after all that time.

String Gauges and Sets

Summary and Next Steps

The Ernie Ball M Steel strings are my go-to’s, and the list of endorsers of Ernie Ball is proof enough that these strings must have something special about them! Why carefully select expensive guitars, amplifiers, and effects and then compromise the whole setup with inferior strings?

Seriously, try them, you’ll be amazed – and it’s only a few dollars for one set so what have you got to lose?

You’ll hear a new tone from your guitar, you’ll hear dynamics that will please the ear and you won’t have to keep changing strings because they’ve gone dull too quickly or break on you.

And they feel just right – bends are smooth and consistent, and the string is smooth under your fingers.

Go for it – you don’t know what you’re missing!

I’ve had a few people wanting to have electric guitar string gauges explained, your wish is my command! I’ll stick to 6-string sets here and focus on electric guitar string sets as that covers most people. The principles are exactly the same. The only thing that would be different for acoustic, bass, 7-string, and 12-string guitars is the actual strings included in the sets.

String gauge refers to the thickness or diameter of the string – the smaller the number, the thinner the string.

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know:

What is string gauge?

What do the numbers and “W” mean?

What do the names of sets mean (like slinky, regular slinky, hybrid slinky and so on)

Why have different gauges at all?

How do I know what gauge I have on my guitar?

What is string gauge?

Like said before string gauge refers to the thickness or diameter of the string – the smaller the number, the thinner the string. It’s that simple!

If you ever needed or wanted to measure strings, you’d probably need to use something like a digital micrometer which would be able to measure this for you but be careful to use the inches number, not fractions or millimeters.

What do the numbers and “W” mean?

The numbers you see on string sets or individual string packets refer to 1000’s of an inch. The confusing bit (unless you’ve read this article, of course) is that they can be written in a few different ways, but they all mean the same thing.

For example, the thinnest string is often 9 1000’s of an inch.

Different manufacturers may refer to this in different ways:

.009 (as in 0.009 of an inch – the true thickness);

009 (just an abbreviated way of saying the above);

09 (just an even more abbreviated way of saying the above).

They all mean the same thing – that is, a string that is 9 1000’s of an inch in thickness/diameter.

The good news is that a manufacturer will use the same convention for all strings in that set, so there is no confusion once you understand the naming convention that is in use. Actually, as we’ll see, most sets are pretty well defined so once you get used to the numbers you are looking for, it would be very hard to make a mistake.

“And the “W”?”

If you see this after a string gauge, for example, 026W or 26W, it means the string is wound like most strings on the low E, A and D strings are. No “W” means it is a plain string like most high E and B strings are – for example, 013.

Now you understand this, life gets a little easier because you get sets that have names that immediately define the gauges of all the strings in that set…

“I’m with you so far, but…”

What do the names of string sets mean? (like slinky, regular slinky, hybrid slinky etc)

Different manufacturers have different naming conventions, but they are consistent within their own range.

I’ll talk through the Ernie Ball sets here, D’Addario, Fender, Elixer all have their own naming conventions.

Of course, if in doubt, look at the detail to find out what the gauge is of each individual string.

Ernie Ball electric guitar strings come in the following sets:

Ernie Ball Super Slinky – 09, 11, 16, 24w, 32w, 42w;

Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky – 09, 11, 16, 26w, 36w, 46w;

Ernie Ball Regular Slinky – 10, 13, 17, 26w, 36w, 46w;

Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom Slinky – 10, 13, 17, 30, 42, 52;

Ernie Ball Power Slinky – 11, 14, 18, 28w, 38w, 48w.

As stated, other manufacturers will have different names for their sets and slightly different contents as well.

D’Addario for example do loads of different sets, 09-42 and 10-46 tend to be standard, but D’Addario also have a concept of “plus” where they make sets that are exactly halfway between!

The main thing is, find what you are comfortable with and understand the pros and cons of each set, and, most of all, experiment!

Why have different gauges at all?

There are two answers to this.

When talking about individual strings

Within a set, each string needs to give a similar feel whilst tuned to different notes.

Basically, the thinner the string, the higher the note at a given tension.

On your guitar, you have two E strings and they are tuned two octaves apart (hopefully!). The E string with the high note is much thinner than the low E string, right? But yet, they have similar tension to them…

This helps playability but also keeps the tension on the neck and bridge even across the fretboard.

That’s it – nothing more to it than that.

Sets that predominantly contain thinner or thicker strings

There are pros and cons that act as trade-offs for sound and playability that will influence whether you go for light (thinner) or heavy (thicker) strings.

I’ve summarised these below, but there really is no substitute for trial and error.

Lighter (thinner) strings:

Pros:

Easier to bend

Easier to fret (push the string onto the fret to form the note)

Cons:

Will sound thinner (as there is not so much metal vibrating and therefore not as much for the guitar’s pickups to “hear”).

Tend to need a high action (more distance between the frets and the strings). This is because thinner strings will move more when they vibrate.

Heavier (thicker) strings:

Pros:

Tend to produce a better sound – a richer and fuller tone that doesn’t sound tinny (because there is more metal for the guitar’s pickups to “hear”).

You can generally get a lower action with heavier strings as they don’t vibrate so “widely” and therefore it will remain easy to fret the notes.

Cons:

Will be harder to bend (but of course, this depends on your strength).

It May be more difficult to fret (push the string down onto the fret), but this is not very noticeable as the distance is small and you can generally get a lower action anyway.

Ultimately, it’s your choice, but here’s a couple of hints!

If you don’t do much string bending (jazz/classical), you might want to consider heavier/thicker strings;

If you play country or blues and use lots of bends, go for lighter/thinner strings;

If you have strong fingers, you can probably go for heavier/thicker strings;

If you’re a beginner, you might want to start with lighter/thinner strings.

How do I know what gauge I have on my guitar?

Most experienced guitarists will know the gauges of strings on their guitars, but if you don’t, most guitars will be set up using the super slinky or regular slinky gauges, so go for these if you’re not sure.

Of course, you can always get a digital micrometer that will tell you exactly what you have on your guitar!

In the meantime, here is a very rough guide on how some of the main guitar manufacturers set up their guitar from the factory, but there are so many variations, I suggest that you research your own particular model.

Fender – super slinky (09-42), some have hybrid slinky (09-46);

Gibson – regular slinky (10-46), some have hybrid slinky (09-46);

Ibanez – super slinky (09-42);

PRS – regular slinky (10-46), most SE models are super slinky (09-42);

Jackson – super slinky (09-42);

ESP – super slinky (09-42) for tremolo-equipped models, regular slinky (10-46) for models without a tremolo.

What happens if I change the gauge of strings I use?

Obviously, if you change your string gauge you will start to see some of the trade-offs I talked about above.

But, in some cases, you may need to tweak your guitar’s setup.

If you have a fixed bridge guitar (like a Telecaster), you will largely be fine unless you are doing something really drastic!

Guitars with floating bridges (for whammy bars) will need a little more setup. In the main, you will just need to tighten up (for heavier strings) or loosen off (for lighter strings) the springs of your floating bridge from the back to equal out the changed tension in the strings.

In rare cases, you may need to adjust the truss rod in the neck and redo the saddle setup and intonation. In really rare cases, you may also need to widen the slots in the nut.

If you are not confident with this, please take your guitar to a guitar tech (sometimes called a Luthier) and get it done professionally.

I won’t go into detail on these tweaks here (that’s an article in itself), but most of the time, you really won’t need to do much at all if anything.

To Round Up

String gauge choice is personal and you may even choose different gauges on different guitars.

I hope this article has helped you understand more about this and provided some direction on what you might want to try next.

I always welcome comments, so if you have any questions or want to share your own thoughts, please feel free to post them.
