It’s often said that it’s easy to learn a new skill if you already know how to play another instrument. But is this really true?

Can you really transfer the skills you’ve learned on one instrument over to another? And if so, how easy is it to do?

In this article, we’ll take a look at how easy it is to learn guitar if you already play the violin.

Is Learning Guitar Easy If You Already Play The Violin?

Learning Guitar after you already play the violin should make it a lot easier to learn. This is because Violins and guitars are both string instruments, this means that you’ve already developed strength in your hands and that you’re already used to putting your fingers on the strings the right way.

But there are some key differences between the two instruments that make them different.

How Is The Guitar Similar To The Violin?

Both are string instruments. This means that you are already familiar with making chords on the strings with your left hand.

Because of this, you’ve already developed more strength in your left hand. Making it easier to play guitar.

What Are The Main Differences Between a Guitar And a Violin?

The Violin is a bowstring instrument and the guitar is a plucked instrument. The violin is played with a bow and a guitar is played with a pick or your fingers.

This means that you need to learn two new techniques with your right hand. Instead of moving the bow across the strings, you’ll be either;

Using your fingers to pick the strings or

Strum across them.

This will take some practicing and getting used to.

A guitar has frets on the neck unlike a violin. Which makes playing guitar a bit easier because you don’t have to have perfect pressure and placement on the strings.

Another difference is that the guitar usually has six strings instead of four on the violin.

How is Playing Guitar Different From Playing Violin?

Playing guitar is different from playing violin in a few key ways.

Firstly, pluck instruments are usually easier to play than bow string instruments. This is because plucking requires less precision and timing than bowing, which can be more difficult for beginners.

Secondly, the violin has no frets, which means that players need to be more precise with their finger placement. This can make the violin harder to play than the guitar, which has frets that guide the player’s fingers.

Finally, the way that the strings are tuned on a guitar is different from the way they are tuned on a violin. This can take some time for beginners to get used to because chords will be played differently on a guitar.

Learning How to Play The Guitar

Now that we’ve looked at some of the similarities and differences between playing guitar and violin, let’s take a look at how easy it is to learn guitar if you already play the violin.

As we mentioned before, one of the main advantages of learning the guitar if you already play the violin is that you’ve developed strength in your left hand from playing the violin. This will make it easier to play guitar because you won’t have to start from scratch in developing the necessary hand strength.

You can start learning how to play right away! There are tons of video tutorials on YouTube showing you what positions your fingers should be in, teaching strumming patterns, and other stuff like that.

If you really want to learn the guitar fast, taking some private guitar lessons might be worth it.

But keep in mind that playing the guitar takes time; you probably need some getting used to at first but after a while, you’ll see progress if you stick with it. Just pick up any beginner tutorial book or watch some videos online and remember: practice makes perfect!

Different Music Genres On Guitar Compared To Violin

One of the great things about playing guitar is that you can play a wide variety of music genres. You can play anything from rock to country to classical and beyond.

The same can be said for the violin, but the violin is generally associated with classical music. This is because the violin has been used in classical music for centuries.

So, when picking songs to learn on the violin you will have a higher chance of finding a lot of classical music than rock for instance.

Music Genres most commonly played on the Guitar:

Rock

Pop

Blues

Country

Metal

Jazz

Music Genres most commonly played on the Violin:

Classical

Pop

Jazz

Folk

Fiddle

Tips For Buying Your First Guitar

Now that we’ve gone over some of the basics of playing guitar, let’s take a look at some tips for buying your first guitar.

There are a few things you should keep in mind when purchasing a guitar. Firstly, you need to decide what type of guitar you want. There are acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and classical guitars. Each type of guitar has its own unique sound.

Usually, I would advise starting with a Spanish acoustic guitar, because of the nylon strings that are easier to press down. But because you already play the violin you’re already used to holding down the strings. So you could just pick any guitar you like.

Secondly, you need to consider your budget. Guitars can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. It’s important to find a guitar that’s within your budget so that you don’t overspend.

I would look for a second-hand guitar or one that is a few hundred bucks. When you’re just starting out and you’re not sure if you actually like playing guitar, you don’t want to be spending $1500 on a guitar to only touch it a few times.

Thirdly, you need to decide what size guitar you want. Guitars come in different sizes, from small guitars that are meant for children to large guitars that are meant for adults. You should pick a size that’s comfortable for you to play.

Are Guitars Expensive?

Compared to a violin guitars are a bit more affordable. The manufacturing process of a guitar is a bit simpler than a violin making it less expensive in general.

For a beginner, you could get away with paying around 200 to 300 dollars. If you want something of better quality it’s recommended to spend at least $500 but even then you don’t have to go crazy, anything less than that will do just fine for the beginning stages.

Electric guitars tend to be a bit more expensive than acoustic guitars. This is because electric guitars require additional equipment, such as an amplifier and cords.

Classical guitars are typically the least expensive type of guitar. This is because classical guitars are generally simpler in design and don’t require as much work to create.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you already play the violin you already have a bit of a head start on learning the guitar. The violin and guitar share a lot of similarities, so the learning curve isn’t as steep.

But on the other hand, there are some key differences between the two and it definitely will take some time to get used to and learn some new techniques.

That being said, it’s important to remember that playing any instrument takes practice and dedication. So be sure to put in the time and effort if you want to learn how to play the guitar.

Guitarists are always looking for ways to improve their tone and technique. One question that comes up from time to time is whether or not nails should be long or short.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of both options and help you decide what’s best for you.

How Long Should My Nails Be For Guitar?

The perfect length of your nails for playing guitar is when you see a small white line of about 1 to 2 mm so that your nail is just a bit shorter than your fingertip.

Cut your nails too short and you might find that your fingertip starts hurting when pressing down on the snares of the guitar. Because you don’t have your nail to take some of the pressure.

Nails that are too long can make it difficult to accurately press down on the strings. They can also get in the way when you’re trying to hold certain chords.

Long nails can also cause snares to slide under your fingernail when playing, this can hurt your finger and it doesn’t sound good when playing guitar.

So, the ideal length for your nails when playing guitar is somewhere in the middle. Not too long and not too short.

Is It Easier To Play Guitar With Short Nails?

Short nails have the advantage of being able to press down on the strings more accurately. This can be helpful when you’re first starting out and are still getting used to placing your fingers in the correct position.

Short nails also make it easier to hold chords, as they don’t get in the way as much.

However, like I said before short nails can make your fingers hurt a little more. Because without the nail to take some of the pressure, all the pressure is on your fingertip.

Is It Difficult To Play Guitar With Long Nails?

Long nails can be difficult to play guitar with, but it’s not impossible.

If your nails are too long they can get in the way when you’re trying to hold chords and make it difficult to press down on the strings accurately.

Long nails can also cause snares to slide under your fingernail when playing, which can hurt your finger and doesn’t sound good.

Your nails might break or bend when they are too long. This can be painful and make it difficult to play guitar.

So, if you have long nails it’s probably best to either trim them down or file them so they’re not in the way as much.

Do I Need To Cut My Nails For Playing Guitar?

No, you don’t need to cut your nails for playing guitar. You can play with long or short nails.

However, I would recommend keeping your nails trimmed down so they’re not too long or too short. This will help you get the best sound out of your guitar and make it easier to play.

For your right hand, that you pick the snares with it doesn’t really matter if you have long or short nails. But for your left hand, that you hold the chords with having short nails will be easier.

Can I Play Guitar With Acrylic Nails?

Playing guitar with acrylic nails will be even more difficult than playing with normal long nails. Because of the same reasons why it is hard to play guitar with long nails but times two.

Your acrylic nails can get in the way when you’re trying to hold chords causing other strings to make a buzzing sound because your acrylic nail is touching them.

And they make it difficult to press down on the strings accurately.

How Did Dolly Parton Play Guitar With Nails?

Dolly Parton is famous for playing guitar with long acrylic nails. She didn’t press down single notes with her fingers.

Instead, she turned her guitar to an open chord and only played open barre chords on it.

Playing guitar this way allowed her to use her whole finger to press all the strings at once. Instead of pressing down single strings with the tip of her finger.

Why Do Some Guitarists Paint Their Nails?

Some guitarists paint their nails because they think it looks cool.

Others do it to protect their nails from breaking or bending. When your nails are painted they are less likely to break.

However, painting your nails can make it difficult to play guitar. If the paint is too thick it can make it difficult to press down on the strings accurately.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. You don’t need to cut your nails to play guitar. But shorter nails are easier to play with.

Long nails can be difficult to play with but it’s not impossible. If you have long nails it’s probably best to either trim them down or file them so they’re not in the way as much.

Playing guitar with acrylic nails will be even more difficult than playing with normal long nails. So, if you have acrylic nails I would recommend taking them off before you play guitar.

When people think of string instruments, they usually think of guitars or basses. But there are other types of string instruments that are just as or even more difficult to play.

What Is The Hardest String Instrument To Learn?

Bowstring instruments like the cello or violin are the hardest string instruments to play. This is because they don’t have frets like a guitar and you need to use a bow to make the strings vibrate. This takes a lot of practice and coordination to get the hang of.

Playing music with a bow is difficult because you have to get the pressure on the strings just right. Pressing the bow on the strings a bit too hard or too soft produces an annoying squeaky sound.

The Cello

The cello is first on this list because it is the most difficult string instrument to play. The cello is a larger, deeper-sounding instrument than the violin. It is played with a bow and has four strings.

The cello is the most difficult string instrument to play because unlike the violin which is also quite difficult, you’ll need a lot of strength when playing the cello.

This is because of the size of the instrument, the strings are so long and thick that they are harder to press down than the strings on a violin for instance.

You also need to hold it in the correct position and use the bow correctly. It takes a lot of practice to get the hang of it!

The Violin

The violin is the second-hardest string instrument to play in my opinion. It is played with a bow and has four strings.

The violin is difficult to play because you need to have very good coordination and control. Just like the cello the violin also doesn’t have any frets on the neck, which makes hitting the right note more difficult.

You also need to be able to hold the violin in the correct position. It takes a lot of practice to get the hang of playing the violin. But it is definitely worth it because the violin produces a beautiful, clear sound.

The Double Bass

This is another bowstring instrument that is quite difficult to play. The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched string instrument in the orchestra. It has four strings and is played with a bow.

The double bass is difficult to play because it is so large. You need a lot of strength to hold it up and press the strings down. It also takes a lot of practice to get the hang of using the bow.

The double bass is just a bit harder than the cello because with the cello you’re playing more demanding melodies compared to the music usually played with the double bass.

What Are Some Easier String Instruments?

Pluck or percussion string instruments are a bit easier than Bowstring instruments. This is because you don’t need to use a bow to make the strings vibrate.

Additionally, there are often frets on the neck of these instruments which also makes them a lot easier to play.

Some of these instruments are the guitar, banjo, and ukulele. These instruments are a lot easier to learn how to play and don’t require as much coordination as Bowstring instruments.

But that doesn’t mean they’re not worth learning! These instruments can produce beautiful melodies and are a lot of fun to play.

The Ukulele

The Ukulele is arguably the easiest string instrument to play. Because it is small and only has four strings.

In addition, the strings are usually made of nylon; these strings are much easier to press in than, say, steel strings of a guitar.

Playing the ukulele shares many of the same concepts as playing the guitar, so if you already know how to play some guitar the ukulele will be even easier for you.

The Spanish Guitar

The Spanish guitar is a little bit harder than the ukulele but still much easier to play than other Bowstring instruments. It has six strings and is played with your fingers, rather than a bow.

The Spanish guitar is a beautiful instrument and can be used to play a wide range of music. Like the ukulele, the Spanish guitar also has nylon strings which makes it a great instrument for beginner musicians.

The Banjo

The banjo is another relatively easy string instrument to play. It has four strings and is played with your fingers.

The banjo is a fun instrument to play and can be used to play a wide range of music. It is also a good instrument for beginner musicians.

Although it is slightly more difficult than the ukulele and the Spanish guitar, this is because the banjo is played with banjo picks and has steel strings.

Conclusion

String instruments can be a lot of fun to play and are a great way to improve your musical skills. However, they can be difficult to play and take a lot of practice to get the hang of.

But don’t worry, if you’re dedicated to learning how to play a string instrument you will definitely get there in the end. Just keep practicing and you’ll be playing like a pro in no time!

You might have already played a few gigs, and those all went well. But now you’re looking to take your performance to the next level and you’re wondering how do I jump with my guitar?

That’s exactly the thing that we’re going to find out in this article!

Here Is How You Jump With A Guitar:

Have Some Space Around You:

The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that there is some space around you. This is because you’re going to be jumping, and you don’t want to collide with anything or anyone.

If you’re planning to jump around like crazy, make sure the stage is big enough and you have as little cables and equipment laying on the ground as possible.

Make Sure Your Cable Stays Plugged In:

The next thing that you need to take care of is your cable. Make sure it’s plugged in good and won’t come unplugged while you’re jumping around.

It might be a good idea to wrap your cable around your guitar strap a few times. That way it definitely won’t pop out. An even better option is to get a wireless connector to your amp or sound system.

Don’t Drop Your Guitar:

The last thing you want is to drop your guitar. This can easily happen if you’re not careful.

Make sure that you have a good grip on your guitar, and that it’s not too heavy for you to carry around.

Make sure your strap is properly attached to your guitar. The strap can save you from accidentally dropping it.

It might also be a good idea to have a backup guitar in case something happens to the one you’re using.

Know When To Jump With Your Guitar

The best time to jump with your guitar is during a chorus or verse when you’re just playing some simple chords that are easy to play while moving.

This might sound obvious but starting to jump around with your guitar when you’re playing a solo isn’t going to work.

Likewise jumping around when you’re playing a calm song isn’t the best idea also, you got to feel the energy of the song a bit.

Tips for Jumping While playing guitar

Practice Before Doing It Live:

Before you even think about jumping around with your guitar during a live performance, you should practice it first.

That way you’ll know what to do and you won’t mess it up when jumping in front of an audience.

Playing on a stage should become second nature, knowing how to play all the songs without even thinking about it should free up some brainpower to make your moves on stage!

Keep When You Need To Sing In Mind

If you’re the lead singer or even do backup vocals, it’s important to keep in mind to not let yourself get out of breath too much. Otherwise, you won’t be able to properly sing when you need to.

It could get really awkward when the music is playing on and you’re standing there not able to sing because of all the jumping around.

Conclusion

Jumping around with your guitar is a great way to add some energy and excitement to your performance.

Just make sure that you’re prepared before doing it, and that you know when the best time to do it is.

Other than that, have fun and enjoy yourself!

Thanks for reading!

The acoustic guitar is a very popular instrument in modern music. While they can be played solo, a lot of the time acoustic guitars are used as part of a band.

What Instruments Sound Good With An Acoustic Guitar?

There are a lot of instruments that sound good with an acoustic guitar, like the piano or percussion. Or with other string instruments like the ukulele or the banjo.

It also depends a bit on your musical taste and style. The instruments that I think sound good with an acoustic, may not be the instruments you think sound good with it.

The main thing to remember when playing any type of music is that the other instruments should compliment each other and not cover up what the acoustic guitar was meant to do.

For example, if you have an acoustic melody section, then try adding some percussion or light bass tones to give it more life without overpowering the melody line on the acoustic guitar.

If you’re looking for great tone combinations for your next gig, here are some recommendations:

Another Guitar

This is a no-brainer. An acoustic guitar is often used as part of a band, with another electric or acoustic guitar to compliment it. If both guitars are playing in unison and harmony this will add depth and excitement to your music and the sound created by the two instruments together.

If you’re playing solo, you could try to use a loop pedal and play in some basic chords then fingerpick a melody on top to create some contrast and diversity in the song.

Harmonica/Mouth Organ

The harmonica can be a great instrument to play along with an acoustic guitar. It’s very versatile and you can get some very nice sounds.

There are a lot of great songs that are played with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. Like Neil Young – Heart of Gold, there is just something about the combination of an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. It gives off a certain ambience that just sounds great.

You could also get a harmonica holder and play the harmonica yourself while playing guitar. This can be a lot of fun and gives a totally new experience to playing music.

The Piano

The piano and acoustic guitar is another combination that just works. It can be a bit tricky to get this sound together but once you do, it sounds gorgeous.

Generally, the way to play is to have the acoustic playing chords or rhythms while the piano goes off on melodies and solos.

This combination has been used by many bands over the years including, Coldplay, James Blunt, and Dotan.

Any Form of Percussion

Acoustic guitars are versatile instruments that work well with many different kinds of percussion. And generally, the more you have going on in a song or piece, the better it sounds.

Drums are always a great option to add some life to an acoustic guitar song. Or something like a jambee could sound really good. My father used to play one and we always had some great jamming sessions with the combination of an acoustic guitar with a jambee!

You could also try playing some basic rhythms by tapping on your guitar with your fingers or using a pick. It can sound great and is a nice change to the standard strum pattern you hear in most songs.

Another thing you could try is adding some light hand percussion like tambourines or shakers.

The Banjo

The banjo is a great instrument to add to your acoustic guitar songs. It can add some nice variety and dynamics in the music.

The best way to play it is when you have an acoustic guitar playing melody or strumming chords while the banjo either picks out notes or plays rhythm patterns in the background.

It’s a great combination that works really well.

The Ukulele

The high bright sound of a ukulele in contrast with the deeper fuller sound of an acoustic guitar can work really well together.

It’s a great way to add some dynamics and diversity to your music. The ukulele has a nice jangly sound and can give a different texture and tone when compared with an acoustic guitar.

The best thing to do with the two is to strum on the uke then play chords or a rhythm pattern on the acoustic guitar.

The Bass Guitar

A Bass guitar and an acoustic guitar is a great combination. The bass has a very powerful and impactful sound that works well in many different genres of music.

Since you’re looking for an instrument that sounds good with an acoustic guitar you could also try adding an acoustic bass guitar! It creates a classic and rich tone that can add some depth to an acoustic guitar.

The best way to use the two is to have the bass playing chords or rhythms while you play melodies and solos on top of your acoustic guitar.

Just don’t go too fast otherwise, it might get a bit confusing for the listener!

Conclusion

There are a lot of great combinations when it comes to playing music with an acoustic guitar. You can experiment and find what works best for you.

There are so many different instruments out there that you can try adding to your acoustic guitar songs.

The important thing is to have fun and be creative. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Who knows, you might come up with the next big hit song!

It’s never too late to learn guitar. It is definitely possible to learn guitar at 20 or 30 at these ages you still have high neural plasticity and can still learn new things easily.

So whether you’re a 20-something just starting out, or a 30-something who has always wanted to pick up the guitar but never got around to it now is the perfect time to start lessons and finally learn how to play.

Is It Too Late To Learn Guitar At 20 Or 30?

Most of the time, when we think about learning guitar, we imagine it as a very young person’s hobby.

Everyone has heard this classic “I wish I learned how to play guitar when I was younger” statement. We picture teenagers with raging hormones fawning over the latest One Direction song, using the guitar as an accessory. However, it is normal for older people to learn guitar.

Here is why you can still learn guitar even if you’re in your twenties or thirties:

Is It Too Late To Learn Guitar At 20?

You’re in your 20s, maybe you’re still studying and wonder: is it too late for me to learn guitar?

Anyone with an average IQ or even if you have an IQ that’s a bit below average can easily learn how to play guitar. So, That part won’t be a problem.

But it will take some effort, as it will for everyone and for you to be able to put some effort in you’ll need some spare time.

This is where it can get tricky. If you are anything like the average 20 something-year-old, your agenda will be full most of the time. You’ll either be studying working or hanging out with friends.

But I know a lot of people at this age will also spend hours on Instagram or Facebook mindlessly scrolling to get a dopamine hit. That time could be spent learning the guitar!

Instead of forgetting about a video you’ve only just watched 5 minutes ago, you can pick up your guitar and learn a new skill.

Is It Too Late To Learn Guitar At 30?

The same thing about your IQ and neuroplasticity also applies to anyone in their 30s. You’re totally capable of learning something new.

But in your 30s you have other responsibilities than in your 20s, maybe you got kids by now and you’re also working full time.

Learning guitar at this age can be a great “mindfulness” activity, where you get out of your day-to-day life for a moment and focus on learning something new.

So, again it’s not too late to start learning guitar. Will you become the next Jimi Hendrix? Probably not, but it can still be a lot of fun learning the guitar and you might even eventually join a band or do a gig!

What Will My Friends Think?

I know this question is in the back of some people’s minds. What will my friends think? Is learning guitar at 36 weird? Honestly, who cares what others think?

Most people probably think it’s impressive that you are learning a new skill, no matter what age you are.

But if you really do care what other people think, one way to go about it is to not tell anyone you are learning guitar. But only tell people once you’re comfortable with it.

First Steps To Get Started Learning Guitar

Buy a Guitar:

To learn guitar you first need to buy one! I would advise you to not go for the most expensive one right away. Because maybe once you start practicing you find out that learning guitar isn’t for you after all.

Alternatively, you can borrow a guitar from a friend. To see if you really want to learn the guitar and see if it’s for you or not.

If you can go down to your local music shop and try out some guitars first before buying one would be great, instead of blindly buying one online.

For your first guitar, the brand you pick doesn’t really matter as it is just for practicing at first. When you get better and start taking it seriously or maybe even play a few gigs, you can always get a really good one by then!

Start Practicing:

After you get over the initial hurdle of buying a guitar, it’s time to get started practicing. You might be a little confused about what you should actually practice.

An app like Fender Play can help you get a structured approach to learning the guitar.

When I was learning the guitar, it took me a while before I learned which fingers to use when playing different chords, mainly because there are so many chords out there!

So, keep in mind that it’s perfectly fine if you get confused over things you read online or what others tell you. Just hang in there and keep practicing if something feels weird.

One thing is for sure, learning guitar is easier if you already play another instrument like the piano. But how easy will it be if you already play the piano?

It will be easier because you are already familiar with reading music, playing a melody, keeping rhythm, and having good timing.

You can compare it to learning your third language, with learning a second language you have to figure everything out from absolute zero.

But with your third language, you already know a few tricks and have figured out how you learn best.

Is It Easy To Learn Guitar If You Play Piano?

Learning the guitar after piano will be easier than starting from zero because you know the basics of playing music. This will also depend on your talent and how fast you pick up on a new instrument.

Although there are some similarities, there are also major differences between learning these two types of instruments.

The answer to the question ‘is it easy to learn guitar if you play piano’ depends not only on personal preference but also on what your goal is.

Reasons Why Guitar Is Easy After Piano

You Played Music Before

The biggest reason why guitar will be easy if you already play the piano is that you have played music before. This means that you trained your ear to pick up on melodies and rhythm.

This will be different for someone that has never touched an instrument in their life. Normally someone has to practice this for a few weeks or even months.

You Have More Finger Strength And Coordination

Playing the guitar is easier if you have more finger strength. Some of the chords might be hard to play because your fingers are not used to that type of movement.

The piano trains for having good finger control and muscle development. You might even notice that you have more coordination between both hands.

You Know How To Read Notes And Chords

Playing the guitar is closer to playing the piano than it is to singing. You need to be able to read notes and know where the music goes, depending on which chord you are playing.

A G chord on a piano will look completely different when played on a guitar. The point is that you already know what chords and notes are and how they work when reading music.

Reasons Why Guitar Could Be Hard After Piano

Guitar Is a Completely Different Instrument

The biggest reason why starting the guitar after piano could be hard is that it is a completely different instrument. The guitar is in a completely different instrument family than the piano.

You will need to learn proper techniques. When playing the piano you’re pressing keys with both your hands.

But when you’re playing guitar you are making chords with your left hand on the fretboard and you’re either strumming or fingerpicking the strings with your right hand.

You Lose Motivation

If You’re expecting to play like a pro within a month because you already play piano, you might be disappointed. You will need to put in a lot of practice.

And if things don’t move as fast as you had expected, you might lose your motivation and inspiration quickly to keep going forward with guitar lessons.

You Might Be Bored Fast Because It’s Easy

On the other hand, you might be a musical genius that always picks up a new instrument easily. If you’re already a master at the piano it might be easy to learn guitar.

You might even be bored of how quickly you learn new things. You will notice that you can pick up some chords or techniques within a week, and this might make the next weeks feel long and boring until you reach the next level.

In this case, learning guitar is easy after piano because you already know the basics of reading music and changing chords.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that there are no shortcuts when it comes to learning a new instrument. If you put in the work it will pay off, but everyone has to start from somewhere.

First Steps To Learning Guitar

The only way to really figure out if learning the guitar will be easy for you is to try and see for yourself!

Go to a guitar store and pick one of the cheaper models, so that you don’t waste a lot of money if you find out that guitar is not the right instrument for you.

When you get home you can start looking up some free tutorials online or join online guitar lessons like Fender Play or Masterclass and start practicing!

Conclusion

Although learning guitar can be easy for some people who have prior experience playing music, it can also be difficult for those who don’t.

It is important to remember that there is no such thing as a shortcut when it comes to learning a new instrument.

The most important thing is to practice and be patient in order to see results. You might find out that you can play like a pro even faster than expected!

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question because the answer partly depends on your personal taste and preferences.

However, here are some general tips that may help you decide which instrument to start with.

Is It Better To Learn Guitar Or Ukulele First?

If this is going to be the first instrument you learn and you want an easy start, then you should go with the ukulele. This is because the ukulele is a relatively easy instrument to learn and usually this will keep you extra motivated to keep learning.

The guitar may be a better choice for more experienced musicians, as it can be more challenging to play than the ukulele.

There are some other things you should take into account when choosing whether to play ukulele or guitar. In this article, we’ll discuss all these things!

You Should Learn The Instrument You Like Most

This sounds quite obvious. But how do you figure out which instrument you like most? Especially if you’ve played neither ukulele nor guitar? Well, you can find out by asking yourself a few simple questions:

What kind of music do you like?

Do you like ukulele or guitar music more? Or rather what kind of music would you like to be playing? Would you love to play songs like “Riptide” or “Over The Rainbow” for ukulele, or do you see yourself playing your favorite guitar music?

Where Do You Imagine Yourself Playing It?

Do you see yourself playing an epic solo on stage? If so, then an electric guitar might be the perfect fit for you.

But If you see yourself chilling on the beach or by a campfire, the ukulele will be better suited.

How Much Effort Do You Want To Put In?

Ukulele will take a bit less effort to learn than a guitar. This is because the ukulele only has four strings instead of six.

Also, the strings are made of nylon instead of steel on most guitars. which makes it a bit easier to press in especially when you’re just starting out and you don’t have a lot of strength in your fingers yet.

With a ukulele, you can play a simple song within a day if you got some talent in you, but with a guitar, this will take much longer.

How Much Do You Want To Spend On Your First Instrument?

If you are on a tight budget, then the ukulele would be the better choice. You can get good-quality ukuleles for very affordable prices (Around $50-$150).

If you’re planning to buy your first guitar, then you’ll be spending at least double that amount. Also, if you’re planning to go on the electric route, you’ll be spending even more than that.

Learn Both Ukulele And Guitar

You could also just go for both at the same time. However, this will be much harder than learning one at a time and you’ll also need to buy two instruments instead of one.

But I can imagine that swapping these two instruments around every once in a while will keep things interesting. When you get bored of one instrument you can just get to practicing the other.

There is a lot of overlays in techniques when learning these two instruments, so when practicing guitar for instance you’re also improving the skills you need for the ukulele.

But you have to practice more to learn as fast as if you had chosen only one.

So if you’re not able to commit yourself fully in your practice schedule, I would recommend starting with either the ukulele or the guitar (Depending on which instrument you like more) and then learning the other when you get more experienced.

You Can Play a Variety of Genres With The Guitar

Even though the same applies to a ukulele, there are a lot more songs out there with the guitar in it than with the ukulele.

So the chance that you find a good song that you would want to learn is higher when playing guitar. With the ukulele, there might only be a few dozen songs you like.

In my opinion, you can learn to play any genre with both instruments. But it’s a lot harder to learn a song on the ukulele than wasn’t originally composed for the ukulele.

This is definitely possible, but you’ll need to be very skilled to be able to learn a song that was originally meant to be played on a normal guitar for instance.

There Are Great Online Lessons For Both Ukulele And Guitar

There are a lot of online tutorials and lessons out there for both instruments and most are offering step-by-step tutorials.

A lot of websites that offer guitar lessons and tabs also offer ukulele lessons and tabs. So it will be easy peasy lemon squeezy to find the right info for both of these topics under one roof.

An example of a site like this is Fender Play, which is my favorite by far. Or Masterclass.com is another great one that has lessons on both guitar and ukulele.

I think ukuleles and guitars are a good place to start when you’re new at playing any kind of instrument. They’re very popular and there is a lot of material out there that you can study from.

Conclusion

If you want to learn how to play a guitar or ukulele, there are plenty of resources out there for both.

If you’re on a tight budget and plan to buy your first instrument (or if you already have one), then the ukulele would be the better choice because it’s easier and cheaper than learning how to play the guitar.

However, if money isn’t an issue and you’re looking for more options in terms of what type of music genre is available, then starting with either the ukulele or guitar could work best depending on which one appeals more to your sensibilities.

You can also start by learning these two instruments at once without too much trouble, this will take longer as opposed to just focusing on one!

If you’re looking for a guitar that is more portable, not as expensive, and easier to play than a regular guitar, then the 3/4 size guitar might be perfect for you. Choosing the right size guitar is a crucial first step, and it can significantly impact your learning experience and progress.

In essence, a ¾ size guitar, with its smaller size and scale length, is often easier for beginners to handle. It’s particularly suitable for younger players or those with smaller hands. On the other hand, a full-size guitar, while potentially more challenging due to its larger size, can offer a richer and fuller sound.

In this article, we’ll delve deeper into the comparison between ¾ and full-size guitars, exploring which is easier for beginners to play. We’ll examine the role of guitar size in classical guitar training for beginners and discuss the transition from a ¾ guitar to a full-size guitar. So, whether you’re a beginner or a parent looking for a guitar for your child, read on to make an informed decision.

Is a 3/4 Guitar Good For Beginners?

A 3/4 guitar is great for beginners because the smaller neck makes it a bit easier to play than a regular guitar and I find that the smaller size makes it more comfortable to put my arm around when playing guitar.

These guitars are smaller than full-sized guitars, but they’re still big enough to feel like you’re playing normal guitar and apart from the size, they are exactly the same as a normal guitar.

They are also less expensive than a regular-sized guitar. This is great for beginners because when you’re just starting out, you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a guitar to find out later it’s not really your thing.

Check out some good 3/4 Guitars on Amazon!

Now let’s rewind a bit and ask:

What Is a 3/4 Guitar?

A 3/4 size guitar is a smaller version of a regular guitar. As the name suggests, it has a shorter scale length of 23-24 inches instead of 25.5 inches and its total length is around 36 inches instead of 40+ inches.

3/4 guitars have been around for many years, but they’ve only been widely available from big companies in recent times partly because 3/4 guitars gained a lot of popularity because of Ed Sheeran whose main guitars are 3/4.

Does a 3/4 Guitar Sound Different?

If you have an old-school guitar teacher, they’ll probably have told you that 3/4 guitars are the worst and sound completely different than full-sized guitars.

Although there is some truth to that, because of the smaller body the guitar will produce less volume and sound a bit flatter. But only the veteran guitarists will notice this and if you’re just starting out, a 3/4 guitar will do just fine!

Buying a good quality 3/4 guitar will also help a lot in improving the sound, compared to buying a cheaper and poorly produced guitar.

Is a 3/4 Size Guitar Too Small?

This really comes down to personal preference, the only way to figure out if a 3/4 guitar is too small for you is to go to a physical guitar store and try out some different models.

As for me personally, my 3/4 guitar is the guitar I use the most actually. This has partly to do with that its right next to my desk and every time I get bored I will pick it up and play some.

This is another reason why I like 3/4 guitars, you can easily put them next to your desk or in a corner of a room and pick them up whenever you feel like it, they are not as clumsy as a regular-sized guitar can be.

Is a 3/4 Guitar Easier To Play?

A 3/4 guitar will be a bit easier to play than a regular-sized guitar because of its smaller size, it takes less to get used to.

Most people can easily wrap their hand around the neck of a 3/4 guitar. Compared to a full-sized guitar where it always takes some practice before you figure out how to properly put your hand around the neck and play chords without that buzzing sound.

Some Disadvantages of a 3/4 Guitar

A 3/4 guitar won’t sound as good as a regular sized guitar, like I said before this is because of the smaller body. Althought you need a good ear to notice it.

They go out of tune a bit quicker, because there is more pressure on the snares when playing it compared to a normal guitar.

Some Advantages of a 3/4 Guitar

3/4 Guitars are less expensive! Because of lower production costs.

They weigh less and are smaller, which makes them easier to carry around if you need to move them or take it on vacation with you.

If you have small hands, a 3/4 size is much more suited for you because of its smaller neck.

In general, they are a bit easier to play than a normal guitar

Why Does Ed Sheeran Use a 3/4 Guitar?

Like I mentioned before Ed Sheeran’s main guitar is a 3/4 guitar. He got multiple Martin LX1 Series acoustic guitars which he named “Lloyd, Keith, Felix, Nigel, and Cyril”.

He used 3/4 guitars because before he rose to fame Ed Sheeran used to be homeless, as you can imagine carrying around a 3/4 guitar is a lot easier than carrying around a regular-sized guitar.

From that point on he got used to playing on 3/4 guitars and now likes that better than regular-sized guitars.

How Much Should You Pay For A 3/4 Guitar?

3/4 guitar prices vary greatly depending on the brand, quality of wood used in production, and other factors.

You definitely don’t have to pay 1000 dollars for a good 3/4 guitar, especially not if you’re just starting out. There are some great affordable models which you could get for around 200 dollars! Like the Cort Earth Mini Open Pore 3/4 guitar.

If you want to go for a bit more quality and have some more money to spend you could consider the Martin LX1 Series, like Ed Sheeran. These go for around 500 dollars.

What Is The Difference Between a 1/2 And 3/4 Guitar?

1/2 guitars, as the name implies are a stroke smaller than 3/4 guitars. These guitars are mostly for children, while 3/4 guitars can be used by both, kids and adults.

1/2 Guitars can also be easier for people with small hands to hold and play, as the neck is even smaller than a 3/4. If you’re still a kid and want to learn guitar, I definitely recommend getting a 1/2 size guitar first before moving on to a 3/4 or regular sized guitar.

Comparing ¾ and Full-Size Guitars: Which is Easier to Play for Beginners?

When it comes to choosing a beginner guitar, size is a crucial factor. The ¾ size guitar, with its smaller dimensions and scale length between 20 and 24 inches, is often easier for beginners to handle. The smaller size of the guitar makes it easier to press the frets and form chords, making it a great choice for beginners.

On the other hand, a full-size guitar, with a scale length longer than 24 inches, may provide a richer and fuller sound due to its larger resonating body. However, it might be more challenging for beginners due to its larger size. The type of music you want to play can also influence your choice. Ultimately, the decision between a ¾ and full-size guitar depends on the individual’s comfort and musical preferences.

The Impact of Guitar Size on Sound: Acoustic vs. Electric Guitars

The size of a guitar can significantly impact its sound. A full-size acoustic guitar, due to its larger resonating body, usually produces a louder, fuller sound than a smaller guitar. However, a ¾ size acoustic guitar can still produce a good sound, especially for more intimate and introspective songs.

Electric guitars, on the other hand, rely less on the body size for sound production. Therefore, a ¾ electric guitar can still deliver a robust sound. This makes it a great choice for beginners looking for a guitar that’s easier to handle but still delivers a powerful sound.

Choosing the Right Size Youth Guitar: Full Size vs. ¾ Guitar

Consider the Player’s Size: The size of the player is crucial when choosing a youth guitar. A full-size guitar might be too large for a child, making a ¾ size guitar a better option.

Think About Comfort: The smaller size of a ¾ guitar can be more comfortable for younger players, making it easier for them to learn how to play.

Sound Quality: While a full-size guitar may produce a fuller sound, a ¾ guitar still offers a good sound quality suitable for beginners.

The Role of Guitar Size in Classical Guitar Training for Beginners

Classical guitar training often begins with a smaller size guitar, like a ¾ size classical guitar. The nylon strings of a classical guitar are easier to press down, and the smaller size makes it easier for beginners to learn the basic guitar techniques.

As the player’s guitar playing skills improve, they may transition to a full-size classical guitar for a richer sound and wider range of music. This transition allows the player to explore more complex pieces and improve their technique further.

Transitioning from a ¾ Guitar to a Full-Size Guitar: When and Why?

Transitioning from a ¾ to a full-size guitar is a significant step in a guitarist’s journey. This transition usually occurs when the player has outgrown the smaller guitar, both in terms of size and skill.

A full-size guitar offers a wider range of notes and a fuller sound, which can be beneficial for advancing guitar players. However, the transition should be made when the player feels comfortable and ready, as the larger size and longer scale length can initially be more challenging. This step is a milestone in the guitarist’s journey, marking their progression from beginner to a more advanced level.

Conclusion

Choosing the right guitar size is a crucial step in your musical journey, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player looking for a new instrument. We’ve explored the differences between ¾ and full-size guitars, and how these differences can impact a beginner’s learning experience.

We’ve also delved into the impact of guitar size on the sound of acoustic and electric guitars, and how the right size guitar can make a significant difference in your playing experience. For younger players, a ¾ size guitar can be a more comfortable and manageable choice, while a full-size guitar can offer a richer sound and a wider range of notes for more advanced players.

FAQs

1. Is a 3/4 or a full size guitar better for beginners?

Generally, a ¾ guitar may be a better choice for beginners because it is smaller, making it easier for new players to manage and comfortable to hold. A smaller size guitar can help beginners learn how to play effectively, as they can handle the instrument better, making it easier to press the frets and chords. However, the choice also depends on the size and comfort of the player. A full-size guitar may be a better fit for larger beginners.

2. What guitar is a great start for beginners with smaller hands?

For beginners with smaller hands, a ¾ size guitar is often a great start. The smaller guitar size makes it convenient to grip and less demanding on the fingers to manage the frets. Furthermore, guitars like the Yamaha JR1, a ¾ size acoustic guitar, are popular among beginners with smaller hands due to its compact size and good sound.

3. Which type of guitar is easier to play for a beginner: Acoustic or Electric?

Many beginners find the electric guitar easier to play initially. Electric guitars typically have thinner strings and a slimmer neck, making them easier to press and hold chords. Nonetheless, an acoustic guitar can offer a more authentic experience to beginners. Using a ¾ size acoustic guitar for smaller hands can also make the acoustic option more manageable.

4. Does the scale length of a guitar affect its playability?

Yes, the scale length of a guitar can significantly affect its playability. Shorter scales such as that on a ¾ size guitar typically have less tension, thereby making it easier to press the strings. This could be beneficial for beginners while learning chords and practicing finger strength. A full-size guitar has a longer scale length, which produces more tension, but can provide a wider musical range.

5. What guitar is suitable for both beginners and those with smaller hands?

A size youth guitar or a ¾ size guitar is often suitable for beginners or those with smaller hands. This type of guitar is available from many guitar manufacturers and usually comes with a comfortable size and shorter scale length, making it easier for beginners and individuals with smaller hands to learn guitar playing skills.

6. Will a 3/4 size guitar sound different than a full size guitar?

A ¾ size guitar will indeed sound somewhat different than a full size guitar. Given its smaller size and shorter scale length, the ¾ size guitar could produce a slightly different tone – usually a little less bass

You are interested in learning how to play a stringed instrument but can’t decide on which one is right for you. So, you decide to go with the one that is easiest. Because in all honesty, playing an instrument only becomes fun once you get the hang of it. This means that easier to play instruments equals more fun, but which stringed instrument is the easiest to play?

The ukulele is the go-to string instrument for this particular conversation, as it is one of the easiest instruments to play regardless of skill level.

Apart from the ukulele, there are a few other stringed instruments that are quite easy to learn compared to others. Let’s have a look at the easiest instruments to play.

The Ukulele

The ukulele is number one on this list of the easiest of all stringed instruments to learn, which is why it has been such a popular choice for so many beginner musicians over recent years.

The ukulele is easy to learn because it only has 4 strings and is quite small which means it doesn’t have a lot of frets compared to a guitar.

Another reason why the ukulele is quite easy to learn is because of its nylon strings, because of this the strings are easier to press down compared to steel strings. because of this, you can get a good sound out of the ukulele without having to build up a lot of finger strength first.

However, this does not mean that it is a simple instrument to play by any stretch of the imagination.

It still takes time and practice to master the ukelele, but it is one of the easiest stringed instruments, to begin with, because you do not need such fast fingerwork as other stringed instruments may demand.

The Spanish Guitar

Apart from the ukulele, the Spanish guitar isn’t too hard to pick up either and in fact, there are a lot of people who find that they quickly become quite proficient with this particular stringed instrument.

Just like with the ukulele the Spanish guitar also has nylon strings which are easier to press down so you won’t get that buzzing sound like you get when you first play an instrument with steel strings like an electric guitar.

When you first start out it’s easy to learn a few chords and play a full song early on.

Of course, it takes time and practice to master the Spanish guitar but if you want something that sounds similar to an acoustic guitar, then this would be a good choice in terms of ease of playability

The Harp

The harp is also another popular choice for beginner musicians because it is so much simpler to play than other stringed instruments.

Unlike with guitar-type instruments with the harp you don’t need one hand to push down the notes and the other hand to strum or pick the snares. But each snare is one single note and some harps have pedals to change the note but for a beginner, you won’t be using that.

The Dulcimer

Another relatively easy instrument that you can choose to play is called a Dulcimer.

The Dulcimer is a stringed type of instrument but it’s quite different from the others because it uses hammers and small mallets to pick each one of the notes instead of pressing down on them with your fingers.

It takes a bit longer to learn how to strum a dulcimer, but if you want something that sounds similar to an autoharp or zither then this is also another good choice for beginner musicians.

The Bass Guitar

The bass guitar is never normally considered an easy instrument to learn but it really does depend on what type of bass you play.

A bass guitar with four strings is considered easier to learn than a bass with 6 strings. The thing that is harder with a bass guitar compared to other instruments on this list is that the strings are made of steel and are very thick, so hard to press down.

In fact, when it comes down to it, technically any stringed instrument can be considered difficult because it takes many years of practice before you perfect your skills with them. However, stringed instruments that have a shorter neck and only have 4 or 5 nylon strings will be easier to learn, compared with longer necks and more steel strings found on guitars for example.

I Hope You Find the Right Instrument For You

The ukulele is cited as the easiest instrument because it is quite small and has nylon strings which are easier to press down than steel strings.

The Spanish guitar is also an easy instrument to learn because of its nylon strings. The harp is another popular choice for beginner musicians because it is so much simpler to play than other stringed instruments.

Finally, the bass guitar is considered difficult to learn but can be easier depending on the type of bass guitar that is chosen.

I hope you found this article helpful on your journey to decide what instrument to lean. Thank you for reading.
